In 1854, during the Crimean War, Elder Stephen Ballard, along with Elders Alexander Ross and John McLean, arrived in Turkey where they established the Expeditionary Force Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Based at Camp Soombay near Varna, the brethren maintained a distinct presence in the region during the height of the conflict. Elder Ballard testified that the group was uniquely preserved; specifically, Elder Ross addressed the brethren, declaring that as long as they remained faithful to their covenants and spiritual duties, they would be protected from the deadly sicknesses and pestilence afflicting the surrounding British army. Ballard reported that through the influence of the Spirit of God, the brethren enjoyed health and witnessed the success of their missionary efforts, as several converts were baptized and received a personal manifestation of the truth. Ballard emphasized the solemnity of their position in a war-torn land and expressed deep gratitude for the protection of their Heavenly Father, while requesting the continued prayers of the Saints in the British Isles to sustain them in their work.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
Since we have been in Turkey, the brethren have all been well in health; indeed, Elder Ross rose and told the brethren that, as long as they were faithful, sickness should not be with them. I feel thankful to our Heavenly Father for His protection, and I can say that we all feel the solemnity of our situation, and ask you to be pleased to give us the interest of your prayers; likewise, we would feel thankful for the prayers of the Saints in the British Isles. We have baptized several, and they have received a manifestation of the truth for themselves, which makes them rejoice in the work of the Lord.
In Their Own Words

I feel thankful to our Heavenly Father for His protection, and I can say that we all feel the solemnity of our situation, and ask you to be pleased to give us the interest of your prayers likewise, we would feel thankful for the prayers of the Saints in the British Isles. — Millennial Star 16:40”
