In April 1853, while serving as a missionary on the island of Malta, Elder Thomas Obray was severely afflicted with inflammation of the liver, a condition that necessitated his temporary return to England for recovery. Following his departure, Elder James F. Bell, who had arrived on the island on February 10, 1853, to assist in the mission, was appointed to preside over the Malta branch in Obray's absence. By June 1853, Elder Obray had recovered sufficiently to resume his missionary duties and returned to Malta to rejoin his fellow laborers. Obray continued his service in the region throughout the summer, presiding over the first branch conference held in Valetta on August 19, 1853, before being released from his missionary appointment in November 1853.
