Elder Johannesson spent thirty-four months in Iceland as a missionary. During this time, he faced severe persecution, including being attacked by a mob of ruffians who broke up his meeting and heaped indignity upon him. On another occasion, a mob sought to kill him, but he was warned and escaped by taking a different route. He also suffered periods of extreme financial need where he had to sell his walking stick and English Book of Mormon to survive, relying entirely on the aid of the Lord to continue his ministry.

In additional accounts of the hostility faced by Elder Johannesson, it is recorded that on one occasion a mob broke into their meeting, extinguished the lights, and in the ensuing struggle, Elder Johannesson was struck on the head, causing his hat to be smashed. Despite these trials, he concluded his thirty-four-month mission and, on June 16, 1903, led a small company of Icelandic converts to settle in Raymond, Alberta.

In Their Own Words

“In October I took a steamboat to this town, which has about 1,400 inhabitants, and when I arrived here I was told it would be no use for me to stop here, as I would be killed. But I was not afraid, for I knew I was directed by the Lord and would be preserved by His power. . . . A Methodist preacher here commenced to warn the people against me and my tracts, but as a general rule the effect of that was to awaken the people to investigate. . . . I was led to invoke the blessing of the Almighty upon the country and its inhabitants, and since that time everything seems to have changed for the better. — John Johannesson, in Fred E. Woods, Fire on Ice: The Story of Icelandic Latter-day Saints at Home and Abroad (Provo, UT: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, 2005), 94.”
