While laboring in New Brunswick, Elder Jesse W. Crosby and his companion were targeted by a mob. The mob held the two men, beat them, and attempted to cut off Elder Crosby's ears, tar and feather them, and drown them in St. John's river. The two missionaries were divinely alerted by a neighbor who heard the plot, and they escaped by jumping through a window and fleeing to a house some distance away where they were protected.
In Their Own Words
“I was appointed to go on a mission to Nova Scotia, in company with Elder Benjamin Brown. We traveled together through the state of New York, and took steamer from Boston to St. John, New Brunswick. We labored in that region for some time, and baptized several. We were much opposed by the priests and the people. At one time, while we were in the town of Sackville, a mob was raised against us. They were determined to tar and feather us, and to cut off our ears, and then to drown us in the St. John river. They had made all their arrangements, and had the tar and feathers ready. We were staying at the house of a friend. A neighbor, who was not a member of the Church, but who was friendly to us, came to the house in the night, and told us of the plot. He said that the mob was coming that night to take us. We immediately arose, and left the house, and went into the woods, where we remained until the next day. The mob came to the house, as had been predicted, but they did not find us. They were very much enraged, and searched for us in every direction, but they could not find us. We felt that the Lord had protected us, and we thanked Him for our deliverance. We continued our labors in that region for some time longer, and then returned to Nauvoo.”
