While with a company of Texians, Elder James Gammell was confronted by a band of ruffians in front of the public square in Independence, Missouri, at the instance of a man named Magraw. Gammell was threatened with hanging from a tree if he did not leave within fifteen minutes. Seeing the armed mob, he fled and swam the river to escape them, later reuniting with the Saints.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 19, No. 38 (19 September 1857), p. 605):

At Independence, Mo., brother James Gammell, who was with a company of Texians on their way to Utah, was mobbed by a band of ruffians in front of the public square, at the instance of Mr. Magraw, the former mail contractor, who told him if he was not gone in fifteen minutes he should hang on that tree, pointing to one in the vicinity. Gammell immediately fled, as he saw a number of ruffians armed with revolvers; one followed him on foot and on horseback, firing at him as he ran; he, however, evaded them, and he afterwards swam the river and joined us.
