While laboring in the Sheffield District in 1863, Benjamin J. Stringam (also identified as B. Stringam) contracted a severe case of smallpox and was confined to his house for nearly three months. The accounts say he recovered through the blessing of the Lord; one specifies that Elder Fowler, the narrator, and several Saints exercised faith and administered the ordinances of the Gospel, after which Stringam was miraculously healed and overcame the illness.
In Their Own Words
“Elder Stringam' has fully recovered from his severe attack of small-pox. It seemed at times as if the destroyer would have prevailed, but, by the exercise of faith and the administration of the ordinances of the Gospel, he has finally been put to rout. Elder Fowler, myself and several of the Saints were unremitting in our attention to him; Elder Fowler and he are doing a good work. — Millennial Star 26:2”
