Elder A. Amundsen was arrested and fined in Bergen, Norway, for preaching. He chose to serve five days in prison on a diet of bread and water rather than pay the fine. During his imprisonment, he spent his time in fasting and prayer, and the jailer spent hours listening to him explain the principles of the Gospel.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 45, No. 35, 27 August 1883, p. 554):
Elder A. Amundsen, of the Scandinavian Mission, was recently arrested in Bergen, Norway, for preaching the Gospel. He was fined, but refusing to pay, he was sentenced to five days' imprisonment on bread and water. He spent his time in fasting and prayer, and the jailer spent hours listening to him explain the principles of the Gospel.
In Their Own Words
“Elder Amundsen was arrested for preaching and fined 85 kroners, which, according to the “Mormon” custom of paying such fines in that country, he settled by suffering himself to be lodged in prison for five days on a diet of bread and water; not, however, before he had borne his testimony to the court officials. While in prison he spent most of his time in fasting and prayer, and the jailor would come and spend hours at a time listening to him explain the principles of the Gospel. — Millennial Star 45:35”
