While voyaging on the ship Horizon, Edward Martin experienced a strong feeling of the Lord's goodness. He specifically credits the realization of this protection to the blessings he received from Franklin D. Richards before departing Liverpool.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
Ship Horizon, off Cork, May 29, 1856. Dear President Richards—It is with great pleasure that I write a few lines, to inform you of our safe arrival thus far. We have had a very pleasant passage down the Channel, and the Saints are in good spirits, and feel to rejoice in the prospect before them. We have organized the company into wards, and appointed presidents over them, and everything is moving on in good order. I feel to thank my heavenly Father for His goodness to us, and I realize the truth of the blessings pronounced upon my head, by you, when I left Liverpool. I feel that the Lord is with us, and that His Spirit is poured out upon the Saints, which causes them to rejoice in the midst of the great deep. We have had a very favorable wind, and are making good progress. The captain and officers are very kind, and seem disposed to do all they can for our comfort. We have had no sickness of any consequence as yet. We have had our meetings regularly, and the Saints feel well. We have had a very pleasant time, and I feel that the Lord will bless us, and that we shall have a prosperous voyage.
