During a conference in Sunderland on the 25th-28th of June, 1855, Elder Edward Martin and others experienced an intense presence of the Spirit, where the room felt as though it were doubly illuminated and every item of benefit to the work was brought to bear by the light of the Spirit.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

Sunderland, June 28th, 1855. Dear President Richards—I take the liberty of writing to you, to inform you of the progress of the work of the Lord in this Conference. We held our Conference on the 25th, 26th, 27th, and 28th of June. We had a very good time. The Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon us in a great degree. I can truly say that I never felt as much of the Spirit of the Lord upon me at any time, only in holy places, as I felt on that occasion. Surely God was with us, for it felt as though the room was doubly illuminated, and throughout the whole you might scarcely be satisfied with occupying two or three hours at a time. Every item of benefit to the work was brought to bear by the light of the Spirit, and the Saints felt to rejoice exceedingly. We had a good attendance of the Saints from the different branches, and the Spirit of union and love prevailed among us. The Priesthood are united, and are determined to roll on the work of the Lord in this part of the vineyard. We have baptized 14 since our last Conference, and the prospects are good for more. We are doing all we can to spread the truth, and we feel that the Lord is blessing our labours. I remain your brother in the Gospel, Edward Martin.

In Their Own Words

“And I can truly say that I never felt as much of the Spirit of the Lord upon me at any time, ONLY IN HOLY PLACES, as I felt on that occasion. Surely God was with us, for it felt as though the room was doubly illuminated, and throughout the whole you might scarcely be satisfied with occupying two or three hours at a time.— Millennial Star 17:31”
