During a massive, tragic explosion at the Ferndale Pit in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, which killed nearly 200 men, no Latter-day Saints were among the victims.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 29, No. 47 (23 November 1867), p. 747):
We are happy to learn that none of the Saints were among the victims of the late terrible explosion at the Ferndale pit, in the Rhondda valley, South Wales.
In Their Own Words
“Terrific Explosion in South Wales.—On Friday afternoon, Nov. 8th, one of the most terrible explosions that have ever taken place, occurred at Ferndale Pit, in Rhondda Valley, one of the largest coal mines in South Wales. There were about 340 men in the pit at the time of the explosion, nearly 200 of whom were killed; some suffocated by choke-damp, and others charred to a cinder by the flames. The most frantic grief rent the hearts of the relatives of the dead, as the lifeless forms were brought up from the pit. In several families every male is swept away. In one house seven corpses were counted, and eight in another. A deep gloom has fallen upon the whole country around. The cause of the explosion is unknown. We are thankful to say that none of the Saints are among the sufferers. — Millennial Star 29:47”
