Discovery of a Rock-Entombed Frog

While quarrying rock for a dam across Cottonwood, City Councilman Emerson found a boulder in a sandstone bed. Upon breaking it open, he discovered a frog inside. After being placed in the sun, the frog was warmed into life and jumped away.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 49, No. 33, August 15, 1887, p. 527):

A singular discovery was made recently in Cottonwood. While quarrying rock for a dam across the creek, City Councilman Emerson found a boulder in a sandstone bed, which, exciting his curiosity, was broken, when lo! a frog, or toad, of average size was exposed to view. It was placed on a rock where the sun shone, and the men clustered about, examined the broken boulder and cavity that imprisoned the frog, and watched the animal. It was at first torpid, but the sun's rays had warmed it into life and activity, and it had jumped away and could not be found.
