During a massive earthquake in the district of Djocjocarta, Java, at 4:30 in the morning, the hospital was destroyed. The director of the hospital and one of his children survived, but the rest of his family perished in the ruins.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 29, No. 37 (14 September 1867), p. 590):

At Djocjocarta, in Java, a terrible earthquake occurred on the 10th of June, at half-past four in the morning. The hospital was destroyed, and the director, with one of his children, escaped, but the rest of his family perished in the ruins.

In Their Own Words

“Among the buildings destroyed was the Djocjocarta Hospital, by which catastrophe the whole of the family of the director perished, only the father and one child succeeding in making their escape. — Millennial Star 29:37”
