Elder J. McFarland reports on the conversion of a shorthand reporter and his wife. He relates that at a seance attended by the gentleman, a half-breed Ute Indian spoke in an audible voice testifying that 'Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, and Brigham Young his legal successor.'

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 39, No. 34, August 20, 1877, page 539):

A gentleman, a shorthand reporter, and his wife, were present at a seance, where a half-breed Ute Indian, who was acting as a medium, spoke in an audible voice, and testified that 'Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, and Brigham Young his legal successor.' This testimony, given under such peculiar circumstances, led the gentleman and his wife to investigate the principles of the Gospel, which resulted in their baptism.

In Their Own Words

“Then they told me about this gentleman, and that at a seance which he attended, a half-breed Ute Indian had testified of the truth of 'Mormonism,' declaring in an audible voice that 'Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, and Brigham Young his legal successor.' — Millennial Star 39:34”
