Captain Thomas Herald, captain of the barque Albania, was trapped in ice packs in the White Sea. While attempting to save other vessels, he and his crew discovered two Russian peasants who had been carried away by ice while duck shooting and were starving. He regarded the timing of his ship passing them as a special mark of divine providence.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 29, No. 30 (27 July 1867), p. 477):

Captain Herald, of the barque Albania, while ice-bound in the White Sea, and while attempting to save other vessels, discovered two Russian peasants who had been carried away by the ice while duck-shooting, and were starving. He regarded the timing of his ship passing them as a special mark of divine providence.

In Their Own Words

“Just as we were going to fill our yards, we discovered a boat, which had a man and boy (Russian peasants) starving, having been carried outside of the ice while duck shooting, and they could not get back. We took them on board and brought them here : it was a special mark of Providence in sending us to their aid. — Millennial Star 29:30”
