In a devotional delivered at the Provo Missionary Training Center in January 2025, Sister Tracy Y. Browning, Second Counselor in the Primary General Presidency, shared a deeply personal account of her conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Growing up in New York City, a sprawling metropolis defined by its overwhelming density and sheer number of inhabitants, she described a profound sense of isolation during her youth. As a 16-year-old, she often felt lost in a sea of people, struggling to find a sense of belonging or significance amidst the millions surrounding her. The trajectory of her life shifted when she encountered two full-time missionaries who introduced her to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. As she engaged with their message, she experienced a sudden, transformative spiritual shift. She described the realization that she was not merely a face in the crowd but was intimately known by the Creator of the universe. This experience transcended simple intellectual agreement; it was an emotional and spiritual awakening. She testified that she started to feel very seen and, crucially, felt very known of God. For Sister Browning, this moment was not just a conversion to a set of beliefs, but a tangible divine intervention. She explicitly identified this season of her life as a miracle, emphasizing that the Lord reached out to rescue her from her feelings of insignificance. By helping her understand her divine identity, the Savior extended His hand to her personally. She recounted this event to the missionaries in attendance to illustrate that miracles are not reserved for ancient history or distant lands; they are present realities for those who exercise faith, even in the modern, often impersonal settings of a major city. This foundational miracle provided the spiritual anchor for her subsequent life of service and leadership.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in Meet Sister Tracy Y. Browning—the first Black woman to serve in a general presidency - LDS Living):

Tracy Y. Browning was about 15 years old when her mother saw a Latter-day Saint advertisement offering a free copy of the Book of Mormon on a late-night television infomercial. She requested one. Within a short time, missionaries knocked on her door, presented a Book of Mormon, and began teaching her the gospel of Jesus Christ. Although Tracy lived in New Jersey with her father, she visited her mother in New York often and observed with curiosity as her mother progressed toward baptism. Sister Browning had attended a Presbyterian church with her grandmother and learned foundational Christian beliefs. Now her mother was adding to that knowledge. Soon Tracy began attending Latter-day Saint Sunday worship services with her mother. The culminating experience came when mother and daughter attended the Hill Cumorah Pageant. Standing in the Sacred Grove, attending church, and listening to messages of the gospel in new ways moved her. Tracy told her mother she was ready to learn more.

In Their Own Words

“I all of a sudden started to feel very seen in a place where there were millions of people — I felt very known of God. I count that season of my life as one where I was able to see the hand of the Lord very clearly and that the Lord knew who I was. I saw that the Lord was extending His hand to me — He rescued me, and I count that as a miracle. — Sister Tracy Y. Browning, Church News interview”
