During a council meeting, President Brigham Young recounted his own experience where he felt prompted by the spirit to give five dollars to a poor man. Shortly after, he discovered a five-dollar gold piece in his pocket that he had not placed there, followed by the discovery of a second one. This served as a testimony that the Lord has charge over gold and provides for his servants who act on spiritual promptings.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in Helen Mar Whitney, 'A Woman's View: Helen Mar Whitney's Reminiscences of Early Church History', Religious Studies Center, BYU):
President Young walked into the council with the gold in his pocket, when they were debating the question of giving up the work, and he said, “Brethren, will you go on with the work and trust in the Lord?” And they were doubtful. When President Young scattered the gold over the room the brethren were as much astonished as men could possibly be. Is not this a proof that the Lord provides means to carry on His work?
In Their Own Words
“The Lord does many things which we would count as small things. For instance, a poor man once came into my office; I felt by the spirit that he needed assistance ; I took five dollars out of my pocket and gave to him. I soon after found a five dollar gold piece in my pocket which I did not put there. Soon I found another. Many think that the Lord has nothing to do with gold ; but he has charge of that as well as any other element. — Millennial Star 39:50”
