Annie Lawton, a former member of the Salvation Army, was searching for the truth regarding baptism. One Monday evening while walking on Green Street, Upton Park, she felt the Spirit of the Lord prompt her to follow two men who were holding an open-air meeting. Upon hearing their message, she felt they were the men she had been seeking and subsequently joined the Church.
In Their Own Words
“I was born in London, and was brought up in the Salvation Army. I was a very earnest worker, and for years I prayed to the Lord to show me the right way, for I felt that the churches I was acquainted with did not have the full truth. I felt that there was something lacking, especially regarding the ordinance of baptism. I prayed earnestly that the Lord would lead me to the people who had the truth. The following Monday evening I was walking along Green Street, Upton Park, which is a marketplace, and I noticed among a lot of other people two men. The Spirit of the Lord prompted me to follow them, which I did. They stood outside Upton Park Station and sang a hymn. Then they explained the gospel in such a way that I had never heard it before. After they had closed their meeting I followed them a good way before I got the courage to speak to them. When I did converse with them I felt they were the very men I had been looking for for a long time. I invited them to my home, and they came and explained the gospel to my husband and myself. We were both convinced of the truth, and were baptized on the 25th of August, 1906. Since that time we have had great joy in the gospel, and we know that the Lord answered our prayers.”
