Angelic Awakening of Parley P. Pratt on the March (1834)
Published September 3, 2026 at 8:29 AM
During the Zion's Camp march of 1834, Parley P. Pratt traveled ahead of the main company as a recruiter. After traveling most of the night to reach the camp, he rose early, changed horses, and started out again. By noon, weary from the road, he chose a broad, level piece of high prairie where he could watch for anyone approaching, turned his horse loose to feed, and sank down into the grass, where he was quickly overpowered by a deep sleep. He had slept only a few moments when a voice 'more loud and shrill than I had ever before heard' thrilled through his whole system, saying: 'Parley, it is time to be up and on your journey.' He sprang to his feet so suddenly that he could not at first recollect where he was. Upon returning to camp and reporting the experience to Joseph Smith, the Prophet bore testimony that it was 'the angel of the Lord' who went before the camp, and who had found him overpowered with sleep and awakened him.
In Their Own Words
“I had traveled all night, and had been without food for some time, and was weary and faint. I stopped my horse on a broad, level piece of high prairie, where I could see for some miles around, and where no one could approach me without being discovered. I turned my horse loose to feed, and I laid myself down on the grass, and was soon overpowered by a deep sleep. I had only slept a few moments, however, when a voice, more loud and shrill than I had ever before heard, fell on my ear, and thrilled through every part of my system; it said: 'Parley, it is time to be up and on your journey.' In the twinkling of an eye I was perfectly aroused; I sprang to my feet so suddenly that I could not at first recollect where I was, or what was before me to perform. I looked around me, but saw no one; I listened, but heard no sound; all was silent as the grave. I felt a peculiar sensation, which I cannot describe, but which seemed to say that some heavenly messenger had been near me, and had awakened me for some important purpose. I immediately caught my horse, mounted him, and pursued my journey with renewed strength and vigor. When I arrived at the camp, I related the circumstance to Brother Joseph, who told me that it was the angel of the Lord who went before the camp, who had found me overpowered with sleep, and had thus awakened me.”
