While preaching in Camden, Australia, in 1856, Elder Amasa Potter and his companion were harassed by a landlord who incited a mob of men armed with spears and boomerangs to attack them. Potter prayed for protection and, as the mob waited to strike his companion, he walked out unnoticed. When the mob broke into the house to find them, they were unsuccessful and instead beat the landlord and his employees.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
I picked up my carpet bag and umbrella, and went to the door with a prayerful heart to God that he would protect us, and I walked out between many of them. It appeared they did not see me, or they did not notice me. The mob was on each side of the door, with their weapons drawn ready to strike at the first sight of us, and as my partner came out the leader of the band called the attention of his men to give some instructions how to deal with us, and thus he slipped past them unseen. We walked down the street, and they did not follow us. We went to the house of a friend, and stayed there until the next morning. The mob, after waiting some time, broke into the house, and not finding us, they beat the landlord and his men, and destroyed the furniture, thinking we were still there.
In Their Own Words
“I picked up my carpet bag and umbrella, and went to the door with a prayerful heart to God that he would protect us, and I walked out between many of them. It appeared they did not see me, or they did not notice me. The mob was on each side of the door, with their weapons drawn ready to strike at the first sight of us, and as my partner came out the leader of the band called the attention of his men to give some instructions how to deal with us, and thus he slipped past them unseen. — Millennial Star 33:34”
