In the summer of 1832, Amasa Lyman arrived at the home of John Johnson in Hiram, Ohio, after traveling from New Hampshire. He had been baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 27, 1832, and traveled west, eventually finding work on the Johnson farm. Joseph Smith, who had been away on a visit to Missouri, returned to the Johnson home in early July 1832. Upon being introduced to the Prophet, Lyman noted that while there was nothing extraordinary in Joseph's appearance, he underwent a powerful spiritual experience. As Joseph grasped his hand, Lyman felt as if he were in the presence of the Lord, his physical strength seemed to desert him, and he nearly collapsed; yet, he felt no fear, but rather a profound peace from heaven. A still small voice whispered to him that Joseph was a man of God, a testimony that remained with Lyman throughout his life. This experience preceded Lyman's ordination as an elder on August 23, 1832, after which he immediately began his missionary service.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
I arrived at the residence of John Johnson, in the town of Hiram, in the fore part of July, 1832. Joseph Smith, the Prophet, had just returned from a visit to Missouri. I was introduced to him, and of the impressions produced I will here say, although there was nothing strange or different from other men in his personal appearance, yet, when he grasped my hand in that cordial way (known to those who have met him in the honest simplicity of truth), I felt as one of old in the presence of the Lord, my strength seemed to be gone, so that it required an effort on my part to stand on my feet; but in all this there was no fear, but the serenity and peace of heaven pervaded my soul, and the still small voice of the spirit whispered its living testimony in the depths of my soul, where it has ever remained, that he was the Man of God.
