Abraham H. Cannon — Prophetic Dream of Apostleship
Published September 2, 2026 at 3:18 PM
In October 1889, shortly before the General Conference of the Church, Abraham H. Cannon experienced a premonitory dream regarding his future ecclesiastical service. In the dream, he saw himself in a meeting with the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He was shown a vacant seat and was told that it was for him. At the time, he was serving as a member of the First Council of the Seventy. When the official call came days later for him to fill a vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve, he recognized the event as the fulfillment of the divine manifestation he had received in his sleep.
Recording note: This account is documented in the journals of Abraham H. Cannon (October 1889, Church History Catalog, MS 1929) as cited in Lawrence R. Flake, 'Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation.' Cannon (1859–1896), a son of First Presidency counselor George Q. Cannon, was serving in the First Council of the Seventy at the time of the dream and was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve on October 7, 1889. His diaries have not been published in a free public online source, so no verbatim first-person excerpt is included here.
