While Benjamin F. Johnson was being held under guard for eight days in cold weather at Adam-ondi-Ahman, a hostile man approached him with a rifle, threatening to shoot him if he did not renounce Mormonism. Benjamin refused. The man attempted to fire the rifle multiple times, but it failed to discharge. A bystander advised the man to fix the gun, which he did, even adding a fresh load. When the man attempted to fire a fourth time, the gun exploded, killing the assailant instantly while leaving Benjamin unharmed.

In Their Own Words

“However, Benjamin declared, “This time the gun bursted and killed the wretch upon the spot.” — Benjamin F. Johnson, My Life's Review”
