While serving as a young missionary, Gordon B. Hinckley faced financial uncertainty when the bank holding his savings account failed. His father and brother committed to supporting him, and the family subsequently discovered a small, forgotten savings account his mother had accumulated from change saved from her grocery purchases, which provided the necessary funds for his mission.

In Their Own Words

“Nevertheless, I remember my father saying, ‘We will do all we can to see that your needs are met,’ and he and my brother committed to see me through my mission. It was at that time that we discovered a little savings account my mother had left—change saved from her grocery purchases and hidden away. — Gordon B. Hinckley, The Life and Ministry of Gordon B. Hinckley”
