During a period of severe illness, Lucy Stringham Grant was considered to be dying. Her family was gathered at her bedside, and her daughter, Lucy Grant Cannon, requested that her father, Heber J. Grant, administer to her mother using consecrated oil. The account is cited as an example of the power of faith and prayer in the life of the Grant family.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
My wife Lucy was very sick for nearly three years prior to her death. At one time I was in the hospital with her for six months. When she was dying, I called my children into the bedroom and told them their mamma was dying. My daughter Lutie said she did not want her mamma to die, and insisted that I lay hands upon her and heal her, saying that she had often seen her mother, when sick in the hospital, in San Francisco, suffering intensely, go to sleep immediately and have a peaceful night’s rest, when I had blessed her. The children went out of the room, and I knelt down by the bed of my dying wife, and told the Lord that I acknowledged his hand in life or in death, in joy or in sorrow, in prosperity or adversity; that I was willing that she should live or die, but that I did pray that if it were his will that she should die, that he would give me the power to so comfort the hearts of my children that they would not lose their faith in the ordinances of the gospel. Within a few short hours, my wife breathed her last. Then I called the children into the bed-room and announced that their mamma was dead.
In Their Own Words
