While serving as mission president in Tonga, John H. Groberg and his wife Jean faced a medical crisis when their newborn son, John Enoch, became critically ill. The Tongan Saints, demonstrating deep faith, united in prayer and fasting on behalf of the infant. Their collective faith and the prayers of thousands of Tongans provided the Grobergs with a profound sense of assurance that the child would survive, which he did.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
When our sixth child, John Enoch, was born, he was very ill. We took him to the hospital in Nuku'alofa, but the doctors there could do little. Jean took him to Salt Lake City, where specialists diagnosed a severe kidney defect. The prognosis was grim. I remained in Tonga with our other children. I felt I was gaining spiritual strength every day and becoming more and more certain that the outcome of John E’s situation would be positive. I felt I could deal pretty well with most anything now. The Tongan Saints, hearing of the baby's condition, began to fast and pray. I remember one Sunday, a stake president stood up and said, 'We have been fasting and praying for President Groberg's son. We have received a witness that he will live.' I felt a peace that I cannot describe. I knew then that he would be all right. And he was.
