After a member named Brother David Crichton hosted native carpenters from the village of Tapueleele and conversed with them about Gospel principles, and after a touring group of missionaries visited the village, the entire village decided to turn to the Church. They dismissed their former minister, turned over their church and the minister's house to the Latter-day Saints, and applied for a teacher and missionary.

In Their Own Words

“In a remarkable short time, word filtered through as far as Upolu that Tapueleele had turned en masse to the 'Mormons.' Hitherto they had every single one, with no exception, belonged to the dominant church of the South Seas, the London Missionary Society. Without one word from us, all the chiefs of the village decided that they wanted the L. D. S. Church and one of its schools in their precinct, and in decorous fashion they met in solemn conclave and then and there decided to oust their minister, turn over the well-built little frame church and native-built but large minister's house to the 'Mormons.' Their pastor accepted the verdict as inevitable, and left. Then they made application for a school teacher and missionary, and in a short time the word flew about the islands that Tapueleele had turned 'Mormon.' — Millennial Star 85:6”
