While in the canyon gathering wood, a tree fell on young Tony, pinning him underneath and causing him to lose consciousness. Fearing the boy was dead, his grandfather and sister, Gertrude, prayed for him. Gertrude experienced a profound spiritual conversion and assurance that God had heard them. Shortly after, Tony regained consciousness and eventually recovered.
In Their Own Words
“As they rose from their knees they heard the sound of wagon wheels coming up the canyon. They did not think of Tom returning so soon but much to their surprise it was he. He had found the party of hunters and brought them back with him. With the help of the men the tree was soon lifted and the still unconscious little form was placed in the wagon. Gertrude held the little head in her lap, watching the white face closely. They had scarcely started on their way when Tony opened his eyes and asked what had happened. He was now breathing regularly, but was too weak to speak above a whisper. — The Young Woman's Journal 37:7”
