Seth Johnson — Divine Guidance to Settle Escalante

Bibliography Research
In 1875, while residing in Hillsdale, Utah, Seth Johnson was approached by Apostle Erastus Snow and tasked with leading a group of pioneers to settle the remote and rugged 'Potato Valley' (later named Escalante). Initially hesitant to move his family to such a forbidding and isolated location, Johnson sought divine confirmation through earnest prayer. He received a powerful spiritual manifestation and a 'burning in the soul' that confirmed the call was the will of the Lord. This revelation provided him the resolve to lead his company through the treacherous Box Canyon and establish the settlement, where he would eventually serve as the first bishop.
