George A. Smith — Spiritual Manifestation at Nauvoo Temple Capstone

On May 24, 1845, George A. Smith participated in the laying of the capstone of the Nauvoo Temple. He described the occasion as being attended by a profound spiritual influence that moved him to a 'flood of tears.' Given the intense persecution following the death of Joseph Smith and the looming threat of exodus, George viewed the successful completion of the temple's exterior as a miraculous achievement and a sign of divine favor for the Saints' sacrifices.
