James Ferguson: Sergeant Major's Leadership and Enduring Witness of the Battalion (1846–1855)

James Ferguson was born February 23, 1828, in the heart of the American frontier. When Brigham Young called for the Mormon Battalion in 1846—a military unit that would march 2,060 miles from Council Bluffs to San Diego—James Ferguson answered the call as a private in Company A.

Ferguson's character and faithfulness were quickly recognized. He rose through the ranks to become Sergeant Major of the entire Mormon Battalion—the highest enlisted rank in the unit. In this leadership position, he bore responsibility for the spiritual welfare and discipline of all 335 soldiers under his command.

In 1855, nine years after the Battalion's completion, Sergeant Major James Ferguson stood before the Church at the First General Festival and bore witness to what the Battalion had accomplished. He testified: "We were mustered into service on the 16th of July 1846." His words carried the weight of direct experience, the authority of one who had lived through the march, sustained the men under his command, and emerged with undiminished faith.

Ferguson's elevation from private to Sergeant Major, his faithful service through the entire expedition, and his public testimony nine years later—all stand as a remarkable witness to the power of faith to refine character and develop leadership in young men. He was rewarded not with earthly wealth, but with the knowledge that he had been instrumental in one of the great faith-promoting adventures of early Church history.
