William Carter: Private, Company C — Mormon Battalion Soldier Who Built His Family and His Faith in the Utah Territory (1822–1899)

William Carter was born around 1822 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company C, completing the full march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California.

Company C marched under Captain Jesse D. Hunter — one of the Battalion's most seasoned officers, a man of deep faith who led his company with both military discipline and spiritual intentionality. Under Hunter, Company C maintained the pattern of prayer, blessing the sick, and Sabbath observance that characterized the Battalion throughout its march.

Carter endured with his company the most demanding portions of the route: the crossing of the Jornada del Muerto in New Mexico, the bull-fight encounter in southern Arizona, and the three-day desert crossing where William Coray later recorded that only divine intervention had saved the column.

After his discharge in July 1847, Carter returned to Utah. He settled in the territory, married, and became part of the pioneer community that was building what Church leaders described as a divinely commissioned civilization in the desert. In the early Utah Church, plural marriage was practiced by many faithful members, and Carter's family structure reflected the community norms of that era.

William Carter died around 1899 in Utah, having lived out more than five decades of pioneer life following his Battalion service. His completion of the march is his primary testimony — a man who walked when he was told to walk, trusted when he was told to trust, and arrived where God said he would arrive.
