Lorenzo Clark: Private, Company D — Mormon Battalion Veteran Whose Faith Was Tested and Proven on the Continental March (1819–1890)

Lorenzo Clark was born around 1819 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company D under Captain Nelson Higgins, completing the full march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Company D included among its members some of the Battalion's most important diarists — Hampden Beatie and Robert Bliss — whose journals captured the daily spiritual life of the march in detail. Lorenzo Clark was part of that same community: present at the same prayer circles, the same healings, the same moments of divine provision that his fellow soldiers recorded.

The march through the Arizona desert was Company D's most severe trial. The three-day waterless stretch documented by William Coray — 'nothing could have saved our lives but the unseen hand of Almighty God' — was a shared experience, and Clark endured it with the rest of his company.

After his discharge in July 1847, Clark returned to Utah and settled there. He married, raised a family, and lived the pioneer life that followed the Battalion's service: farming, attending his ward, participating in the building of communities that were, in the Church's understanding, divinely commissioned.

Lorenzo Clark died around 1890 in Utah. His life represents the tens of thousands of early Latter-day Saints whose individual accounts were not published but whose faith was expressed in consistent action — the most durable form of testimony.
