Hampden Sidney Beatie: A Primary Diarist of the Mormon Battalion — His Journal Records Faith, Prayer, and Providence (1826–1885)

Hampden Sidney Beatie was born August 17, 1826, in Ohio. He joined the Church in the early 1840s and gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo. When the Mormon Battalion was called in July 1846, he enlisted in Company D and kept one of the most detailed personal journals of the entire march.

Beatie's journal is among the handful of primary eyewitness accounts that historians rely on to reconstruct the day-by-day experience of the Battalion's 2,000-mile march. Like Robert Bliss and Lewis Barney — his fellow Company D diarists — Beatie wrote with care and precision, noting not only distances marched and conditions encountered but the spiritual discipline that accompanied the march.

His entries document the Sunday prayer meetings held wherever the column stopped, the administration to the sick by those holding the priesthood, and the consistent pattern of recovery that followed those ordinances. He recorded men who were administered to when ordinary means had failed and who recovered in ways that the men around them attributed to divine intervention.

Beatie also recorded the quiet, daily courage of the march: the moment when water ran out, the moment when the column pressed forward not knowing if they would survive the next desert crossing, and the moment when provision arrived.

After his discharge in July 1847, Beatie returned to Utah and eventually became a successful businessman and civic leader in the Salt Lake Valley, later serving as a U.S. Marshal for Utah Territory. His journal stands as a primary witness that the Mormon Battalion's march was sustained not only by physical endurance but by the spiritual practices of a people who expected God to be present in their extremity.
