Day of Pentecost at the Kirtland Temple Dedication — Tongues of Fire, Angels, and a Pillar of Light (March 27, 1836)

The dedication of the Kirtland Temple on March 27, 1836, and the weeks surrounding it, produced the most extensively documented outpouring of spiritual gifts in modern religious history. Participants explicitly compared it to — and in some accounts declared it greater than — the Day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2. The manifestations were witnessed by hundreds of members and are documented in multiple contemporary journals and accounts.

The manifestations were documented by dozens of independent eyewitnesses across weeks of meetings:

**Tongues of Fire:** Multiple witnesses reported seeing cloven tongues of fire resting on the heads of those present — the same sign that accompanied the Apostles at Pentecost. Benjamin Brown wrote: "Some have seen the heavens opened and seen the Savior; others have seen angels on the four corners of the house of the Lord with drawn swords... thick on the ridge — Elisha with his chariot of fire, Peter, John, and James."

**Pillar of Fire:** A non-Latter-day Saint neighbor, Lucius Pomeroy Parsons, writing to his sister on April 10, 1836, reported: "They report that the Savior appeared personally with angels and endowed the Elders with powers to work Miracles." Members reported seeing a pillar of fire resting upon the temple.

**Rushing Wind:** Eyewitness accounts describe the sound of a mighty rushing wind sweeping through the temple, consistent with the Acts 2 account. Some described the Spirit's presence as rushing wind filling the building. The sound was heard both inside and outside the building.

**Angels Visible:** Multiple witnesses, including Heber C. Kimball, reported seeing angels standing in the congregation. Some saw the angel standing at the top of the pulpit. Beautiful singing was heard from the top of the temple in the evening.

**Prophesying and Tongues:** Speaking in tongues and their interpretation were widespread phenomena throughout the weeks of meetings. The Prophet Joseph noted: "The Holy Spirit rested down upon us and we continued in the Lord's house all night prophesying and giving glory to God."

**Hale Family Account:** Aroet Lucious Hale, whose parents were present, recorded in his journal: "The Kirtland Temple was dedicated in 1836 on the 27th of March. On this occasion [April 3, 1836] the prophets Moses, Elias, and Elijah appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and committed the keys of their respective dispensations to him. The power of God was made manifest in a great degree. The visions of heaven were opened, angels administered to them. Beautiful singing was heard from the top of the temple in the evening. I well remember of hearing our parents talk of these things."

Joseph Smith himself declared: "It was a Pentecost and an endowment indeed, long to be remembered, for the sound shall go forth from this place into all the world, and the occurrences of this day shall be handed down upon the pages of sacred history, to all generations; as the day of Pentecost, so shall this day be numbered and celebrated as a year of jubilee, and time of rejoicing to the Saints of the Most High God."
