During Wilford Woodruff's British mission in Liverpool, he encountered a woman who was possessed by a demonic spirit. As Wilford recorded: 'A Woman Possessed of the Devil—Attempt to Cast it Out and Fail—Turn Out the Unbelievers, and then Succeed—The Evil Spirit Enters her Child.' When the elders first attempted to cast out the evil spirit, their efforts were unsuccessful because unbelievers were present in the gathering. However, when the nonbelievers were removed from the house, the power of God was manifest, and the evil spirit was successfully cast out through the power of the priesthood. This dramatic deliverance demonstrated that the power of Satan and evil spirits is real, but that the authority and power of God through the priesthood is infinitely greater. Wilford's account provides important lessons about faith, priesthood authority, and the reality of spiritual forces in the world.
