While crossing the plains on her way to the Salt Lake Valley with her family, Mary Fielding Smith's oxen became lost. The male members of the company searched unsuccessfully in one direction for the animals. However, Mary, after earnest prayer to the Lord, went directly to a thicket in the opposite direction and successfully recovered all the oxen, disregarding the herdsman's assurance that they were in the opposite location. This divine guidance demonstrated Mary's faith and the Lord's responsiveness to prayer during the perilous pioneer journey.
