Pentecostal Outpouring in the Kirtland Temple (April 6, 1836)

On April 6, 1836 — the Day of Pentecost — in the Kirtland Temple there was a powerful Pentecostal outpouring in which many of those assembled experienced extraordinary spiritual manifestations. Witnesses reported the Spirit coming like a mighty rushing wind that filled the house; cloven tongues of fire resting on the brethren; many speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance; visions; prophesying; and the appearance of angels whose voices were heard singing heavenly music. Zebedee Coltrin recorded that he saw the Lord “high and lifted up” and that angelic choirs sang upon the building. William Draper testified that he received blessings during the endowment meeting and the ordinances administered under the hands of Bishop Edward Partridge (of Missouri) and Bishop N. K. Whitney (of Kirtland) with their respective counselors. Present accounts identify Joseph Smith, assembled elders and other priesthood holders, and the congregation among those who participated; those present described a general rejoicing and saw the manifestations as confirming the divine nature of the work of restoration.
