Blind Boy Born Without Pupils Receives Sight After Blessing

A baby was born without pupils in his eyes — blind from birth, with no natural mechanism for sight. His parents were members of the Church. Some time after the birth, the father came to Elder Matthew Cowley and asked him to bless the child.

Elder Cowley was hesitant. He told the father he had no authority to command a creative act — the creation of pupils where none had ever existed. But the father persisted, expressing unwavering faith that through the priesthood, God could do this.

Cowley relented and blessed the child, commanding in the name of Jesus Christ that pupils be created in the boy's eyes. Shortly after, the boy had pupils and could see.

Elder Cowley later reflected: 'Don't tell me that the gifts of healing are done away with.' He described this as an example of priesthood being used not merely to heal, but to create — an act of divine power he felt unworthy to perform but which the Lord honored because of a father's faith.
