Translation of the Book of Mormon (April–June 1829) — Oliver Cowdery as Primary Scribe; Discovery Leading to the Restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood

In the spring of 1829, while Joseph Smith was translating the Book of Mormon in Harmony, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, Oliver Cowdery became his primary scribe. Cowdery first saw Joseph on the evening of Sabbath, April 5, 1829; assisted him with temporal business on April 6; and on April 7 began to write as Joseph dictated. From April through June 1829 Oliver sat across a table from Joseph day after day and wrote every word by hand, reportedly “without erasure or consultation of any manuscript,” completing the translation in roughly 65 working days. Witnesses describe Joseph’s use of the Urim and Thummim (or “interpreters”) and of a seer stone placed in a hat while he dictated. During the course of translating the account of the Savior’s ministry to the Nephites (3 Nephi), Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery encountered explicit references to baptism for the remission of sins and the necessity of divine authority to perform the ordinance. That textual discovery created a spiritual urgency which, according to the sources, prompted them to seek the necessary authority — an inquiry that resulted in the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood, conferred by John the Baptist. The merged account preserves the detailed chronology, the translation method descriptions, and the connection between the translation of 3 Nephi and the subsequent restoration of priesthood authority.
