Celebrating 100 Years of Institute: A Century of Faith and Belonging
In 1926, a small, humble building near the University of Idaho in Moscow became the birthplace of a movement that would eventually span the globe. What began as a single location to support students during their pivotal college years has blossomed into a worldwide network of more than 2,700 locations across 170 countries. As we mark 100 years of institute, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating a century of building disciples, fostering community, and providing a sanctuary for young adults to deepen their conversion to Jesus Christ. This milestone is not merely a historical anniversary but a testament to the enduring power of gathering together to learn of the Savior.
For many, the Institute of Religion has served as a vital anchor during the often-turbulent transition into adulthood. It is a place where questions are welcomed, friendships are forged, and the gospel is studied in a way that resonates with the unique challenges of the university experience. Whether a student is firm in their testimony or just beginning to explore the restored gospel, the program offers a space for spiritual growth. This environment of belonging has proven essential, as evidenced by a recent 30% growth surge in enrollment over the past two years, signaling that the need for such spiritual community is as strong today as it was a century ago.
Many alumni look back on their time in institute as a defining period in their lives, often citing it as the place where their faith moved from a borrowed belief to a personal conviction. One alumna, reflecting on her time at a campus institute, shared her experience: I walked into that building feeling lost and overwhelmed by the pressures of my degree, but I walked out with a peace I hadn't felt in years. It wasn't just the classes; it was the realization that I wasn't alone in my struggles. That community became my lifeline, and the lessons I learned there about the Savior's love for me personally changed the trajectory of my life forever. This sentiment is echoed by thousands who have found Learning and Spiritual Conversion within these walls.
Church leaders have long recognized the importance of this program in the lives of young adults. As the Church commemorates this centennial, the focus remains on the mission to help students discover their divine identity. The program has been described as a place where young adults can find a community of friends centered on the Savior. This focus on the Savior is the heartbeat of the institute experience, providing Inspired Wisdom that guides students through the complex decisions of their youth. The impact of these years is often reflected in the Testimonies (Why I Believe)) that students carry with them long after they graduate.
Beyond the classroom, the history of the institute program is filled with stories of faith and quiet miracles. Many students have found that the simple act of attending class, even when they felt spiritually dry, led to the Holy Ghost / Guidance and Direction they desperately needed. There are accounts of students who, through the friendships made at institute, were protected from making life-altering mistakes or were given the strength to endure personal tragedies. These experiences highlight that the institute is more than an educational program; it is a Sacred Places / Holy space where the influence of the Spirit is a constant companion.
As we look toward the future, the vision for the next century of institute is one of continued expansion and deeper connection. With projections suggesting that enrollment could reach one million students during this centennial year, the program is poised to reach more young adults than ever before. The upcoming worldwide devotional, scheduled for February 1, 2026, will serve as a global gathering to honor this legacy. It is an opportunity for current students and alumni alike to reflect on the blessings of the past and the promise of the future. For those who have walked these halls, the anniversary is a reminder of the Faithful Service & Sacrifice of the many teachers and leaders who have dedicated their lives to this work.
Whether you are a current student or an alumnus looking back on your own college years, the centennial of the institute is a time to celebrate the community that has shaped so many lives. It is a time to remember that no matter where we are in our journey, there is a place for us to learn, to grow, and to belong. As we celebrate 100 years of institute, we invite you to share your own stories of how this program has strengthened your faith.
