Zaidee Walker Miles — The Vision of the St. George Temple Site
Published August 30, 2026 at 11:44 PM
In her historical writings for the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Zaidee Walker Miles preserved the account of a vision received by her father regarding the St. George Temple. Before the temple site was selected or dedicated, her father saw the completed building in a vision, standing in glory upon the exact spot in the lower valley that was then a swampy alkali flat. Zaidee recorded this vision as a faith-promoting evidence that the location was divinely chosen, despite the immense engineering challenges the pioneers faced in pounding volcanic rock into the marsh to create a stable foundation. This account served to bolster the faith of the Dixie Saints during the long years of the temple's construction.
Recording note: No verbatim first-person text survives in public sources. The vision was preserved by Zaidee Walker Miles — the daughter of Charles Lowell Walker, the St. George settler and diarist to whom the vision is attributed — in her historical writings for the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and the family's papers are held by BYU Special Collections.
