A young woman, having been proposed to by a young man who she discovered had a drinking problem, observed him in a deeply intoxicated state while he was attending his dying mother. During this trial, she prayed for guidance and was given the inspiration that she must not marry him to avoid a future of suffering, which helped her successfully resist the engagement.
In Their Own Words
“One night while watching by the bedside of his dying mother, he entered the room intoxicated. Entirely lost to his surroundings, face devoid of all manly expression, unable to sit properly upon a chair. Looking at him in that awful condition, God made it plain what suffering I must endure as his wife. Then after offering up a silent prayer that I might make a righteous decision and have help in keeping it, I determined not to become his wife. So the battle was fought with the Lord’s help, and there has always been the sustaining thought that heaven and conscience prompted the action. — The Young Woman's Journal 10:8”
