An unnamed lady, 57 years old, who was a member of the Church of England, prayed for three years to know if her church was the true Church of Christ. In answer to her prayers, she had a vision of a man baptizing for the remission of sins and heard him declare he was sent with authority from heaven to baptize believers regardless of creed. She then searched for such a person. Upon attending a meeting in Wales, she immediately recognized Thomas C. Martell as the preacher she had seen in her vision years prior.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 38, No. 28, July 10, 1876, p. 444):

A lady, 57 years of age, who had been a member of the Church of England for many years, and who had been very zealous in her religious duties, had for three years been praying to the Lord to know whether the Church of England, of which she was a member, was the true Church of Christ. At that time she had become very anxious to know whether the Church of England, of which she was a member, was the true Church of Christ, when, in answer to her fervent prayers, she saw a man baptizing for the remission of sins, and heard him declare that he was sent with authority from heaven to baptize all believers of the Gospel, irrespective of creeds and denominations, etc. From that day she had been looking for what she terms the John the baptist-like person of whom she was to be baptized for the remission of sins. So indelible was the impression of the vision on her mind, that she felt confidently sure he would some day come, preach the Gospel to her and others, and administer to them the ordinance of baptism. It came to pass one day when I was preaching, that this lady attended the meeting, and immediately recognized the preacher to be the very individual whom she so long ago saw in the vision. She was baptized by Elder Martell, and she says she is now satisfied that she has found the truth.
