In February 1834, William Leany and his twin brother Isaac heard the testimony of Mormon elders—identified as Elder James and Peter Dustin—who came to their community in Kentucky preaching the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Both brothers received their testimony and believed. The elders had been mobbed out of Russellville, Logan County, and in their righteous response, they washed their feet as a testimony against that place and people. What followed was divine judgment: the next summer and fall, Asiatic cholera broke out among the people of Russellville and nearly depopulated the place. This pattern of those who reject the Lord's servants experiencing divine consequences, while those who received the testimony were blessed, demonstrates the Lord's protection of His cause and His servants.
In Their Own Words
“It was brought to us by Elder James (page torn and unable to read copy) and Peter Dustin in February 1834 and on their way preaching 22 miles west of us they were mobbed out of Russelville, Logan county and although the snow was deep and very cold they washed their feet as a testimony against that place and people and the next summer and fall the asiatic cholera? broke out among the people and nearly depopulated the place. But I and my twin brother received their testimony and on our way to Missouri in the fall of 1836 I got so terribly crippled and heavy in debt that I did not [go] to where the Church were until 1843 at Nauvoo.”
