Following his arrest in 1874 in connection with the Mountain Meadows Massacre, William Horne Dame was held in the Utah Penitentiary for several years. During this period of intense legal and social trial, Dame maintained his innocence and recorded in his journals and letters that he felt sustained by the Lord. He corresponded with Wilford Woodruff, who offered spiritual support. In 1876, the charges against him were unexpectedly dismissed by the prosecution, and he was released from prison. Dame and his family viewed this sudden legal resolution and his preservation during the ordeal as a direct answer to prayer and a miraculous deliverance from a situation that threatened his life and reputation.
