In the spring of 1844 in Nauvoo, Joseph Smith met with the Twelve Apostles and gave what became known as his final charge. Wilford Woodruff later testified that Joseph stood for about three hours, “clothed upon with the Spirit and power of God,” and declared that he had laid the foundation of the kingdom, organized the Church, and conferred the keys and ordinances of the last dispensation upon the Apostles. Joseph charged them to carry on the work and bear off the kingdom. The meeting was confidential, and participants had been placed under an oath of secrecy. Woodruff’s later recollections describe the meeting as a powerful spiritual manifestation and affirm that responsibility for the work devolved upon the Twelve. A further account, published after an excursion of Salt Lake Temple workers, records Woodruff’s testimony of receiving his temple endowments and priesthood keys from Joseph Smith, and identifies him as the only then-living man who had done so. Zina D. Young and thirteen others were also reported to have corroborated hearing Joseph state that responsibility for the work devolved upon the Twelve. Woodruff additionally recalled that he and Brigham Young were in Boston when they learned of Joseph’s death, describing the spiritual darkness and grief that followed; these recollections provide context for his testimony but concern the same final charge and bestowal of keys. People named across the accounts include Joseph Smith, Wilford Woodruff, the Twelve Apostles, Zina D. Young, Brigham Young, Lorenzo Snow, George Q. Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith.

In Their Own Words

“I bear my testimony that in the early spring of 1844, in Nauvoo, the Prophet Joseph Smith called the Twelve Apostles together and he delivered unto them the ordinances of the church and kingdom of God; and all the keys and powers that God had bestowed upon him, he sealed upon our heads, and he told us that we must round up our shoulders and bear off this kingdom, or we would be damned. I am the only man now living in the flesh who heard that testimony from his mouth, and I know that it was true by the power of God manifest to him. At that meeting he stood on his feet for about three hours and taught us the things of the kingdom. His face was as clear as amber, and he was covered with a power that I had never seen in any man in the flesh before. I have traveled a great deal since that time, and I have traveled in the midst of much opposition and many dangers, but the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith in that meeting has been like a fire shut up in my bones. I have felt that I was responsible for the building up of this kingdom, and I have felt that I must do my duty, and that I must be faithful to the end.”

— Wilford Woodruff, 1897 testimony, as cited in Richard Neitzel Holzapfel and Stephen H. Smoot, 'Wilford Woodruff’s 1897 Testimony'
