Wilford Woodruff Sees Storms Gathering in a Missionary Blessing — and Promises Benjamin L. Luddington Safe Return from India
Published September 28, 2026 at 8:32 AM
Before the departure of missionary Benjamin L. Luddington for his mission to India, Wilford Woodruff was voice in blessing him and his companions. As he blessed them, Woodruff later recalled, he 'could see nothing but seas, waves, and storms' — the seas appeared heaped up, and he knew the missionary was going to face storms, troubles, and dangers on his mission. Yet in the blessing he also promised the brethren that they should return home again — a promise fulfilled when Luddington weathered the hardships of the India mission and came back safely. Woodruff retold the experience as evidence that the Lord shows His servants the dangers ahead.
In Their Own Words
“In blessing brother Luddington, I recollect that I was mouth, and I well remember that I could see nothing but seas, waves, and storms. The seas appeared to be heaped up, and I knew that he was going to see storms and be exposed to troubles and dangers. But there was one thing that we did bless those brethren with that I rejoice in, and that is that they should return home again. I have seen that brother since he returned, and he has passed through all these things; he has been shipwrecked, and has been exposed to the dangers of the sea and of the land, and has had to contend with the powers of darkness, and with the prejudices of the people, and with the various difficulties that are incident to a mission to the nations of the earth; but the Lord has preserved him, and he has returned home in safety, according to the blessing that was put upon his head.”
