Following a series of persecutions, including stoning and abuse, missionaries continued their work in Watford. On July 10, 1898, twelve individuals were baptized and subsequently received a powerful spiritual manifestation during their confirmation meeting.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 60, No. 30, 28 July 1898, p. 475):

On Sunday, July 10, we had the pleasure of baptizing twelve persons, and in the evening, at our confirmation meeting, we had a glorious outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which was a testimony to all present that the Lord is with His people.
