After the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum, Lucy Mack Smith entered the room where their bodies were laid out. Overcome by grief and questioning why God had allowed this to happen, she cried out to the Lord. She received a direct, audible response confirming their eternal rest.
In Their Own Words
“I was now left to the mercy of the mob, and to the buffetings of the world, and to the care of my Heavenly Father, who has ever been my support, and who will be, I trust, to the end. I had now to look upon the mangled remains of my children, and to see them laid in the cold and silent tomb. I had to see the brothers of my children, who were left to me, weeping for their brothers, and to hear the cries of their wives and children, and to see the tears of their sisters, and to hear the lamentations of their friends, and to see the sorrow of the Saints, and to feel the weight of the burden that was laid upon me. I sank back, crying to the Lord, in the agony of my soul, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken this family!” A voice replied, “I have taken them to myself, that they might have rest.” I then felt that I had no more to say, but to submit to the will of God, and to wait for the time when I should be called to follow them.”
