In July 1836, while lodging at the home of Joseph Fielding in Toronto, Parley P. Pratt experienced a vision of the Spirit in which he heard the voice of the Lord address him by name. The Lord asked if any of His previous revelations to Pratt in dreams had failed; Pratt affirmed they had not. The Lord then commanded Pratt to warn the people to repent, declaring that despite current fruitfulness, a famine would strike the land. This was described not only as a famine for bread but a famine for the Word of the Lord, as the Lord intended to call His servants away to nations afar off. Pratt obeyed this command, continuing to preach and warn the people of the coming prophecy.
In Their Own Words
“In July, 1836, I took leave of the Saints in Upper Canada, and returned to Kirtland, Ohio. I had been absent about three months, during which I had baptized many people, and organized several branches of the Church. I had now been absent from my family for some time, and was anxious to see them. I accordingly made preparations to return to them. But, before I left Toronto, I had a dream, or vision of the Spirit, in which the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: 'Parley!' And I answered: 'Here am I;' for I was in a vision of the Spirit and knew that it was the Lord who spake unto me. And he said: 'When did I ever reveal anything unto you in a dream and it failed to come to pass?' And I answered: 'Never, Lord.' 'Well, then,' He continued, 'go unto the people and cry unto them with a mighty voice that they repent, lest I smite them with a curse and they die; for, notwithstanding the present fruitfulness of the earth, there shall be a famine in the land; and not only a famine for bread, but a famine for the Word of the Lord; for I will call my servants out from their midst and send them to the nations afar off.' I awoke, and the vision was fresh in my mind. I immediately went forth and proclaimed the warning to the people, as I was commanded. I told them that the Lord had spoken to me, and that a famine was coming upon the land, and that the servants of the Lord would be called away from their midst. Many of the people believed my words, and repented of their sins, and were baptized. And the Lord blessed them, and they were comforted. But there were many who mocked and derided me, and would not hearken to the warning. I continued to labor among them for some time, and then I took my departure, and returned to Kirtland.”
